I've carried bales of hay many times. I find chin-ups, deadlifts, and shrugs prepare me for them a lot more than curls (after a long day of stacking hay, I feel it most in my upper back and shoulders).
Of course, my form may stink, since after 12 hours straight, form tends to fall apart as your mind and body go numb. But that may just be me.
