Client w/Medical Issue
I have a co-worker of mine that wishes to begin crossfit. He was recently treated for acute histoplasmosis (cauesd by repeated exposure to bird/bat droppings in abandoned houses), which led to Reactive Airway Disease. The doctor gave him the okay to begin exercising, but I don't want to give the guy bad advice, based on his lung issues. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Client w/Medical Issue
he has asthma. So treat it as if he has exercised induced asthma, I suspect his lung compliance sucks, so start him light to see what triggers and how much effort triggers an attack.. make sure he carries his inhaler with him during his workouts.
rowing 1k would be a good test, ( would be a great thing for him to build better lungs on) teach him the foundation of crossfit, ie various exercises that would be about four sessions there, then a SS cycle .. that would be a good way for both to get a comfort level regarding his ability to work. Then go from scaled xfit to rx crossfit. |

Re: Client w/Medical Issue
Frank brings up some good points. Simplicity and basics are usually the best way to go, start at the beginning and see what happens. I'd have him do the CF warm-up and see how he favors after that, not only can you gauge his tolerance but it'll expose him to the kind of work he'll be doing in any typical CF work-out. If he fans out ok, next time increase the intensity a step. Just a thought, take it for what it's worth

Paul:
I agree...treat it like asthma, although he'll probably get better in time. |
