Homemade Jump rope for speed!!
After considering buying a Buddy Lee jump rope and seeing the issues with them, I decide there had to be an easy homemade solution for this simple piece of equipment. I turned to the message boards for answers and found what I believe is the simplest, fastest rope out there.
Material needed: (16") 1/2" dia. pvc pipe (they measure inside diameter) outside dia. is 13/16". (qty.2) 1/2" end caps for pipe (~10 ft) 1/16th plastic covered wire (qty.2) crimp washers for wire I decided to make handles 8" for the extra movement you can create with longer handles. Construction is simple enough. Total cost =$4.00 All the best, Jeff Dale |

I think that's a cool idea. I might have to make myself one of those.
As far as fixing the wear issue, surely you could just get a rubber washer to put in the whole. Thus solving that issue. |

No, I haven't seen that issue yet. I'll keep an eye on it though, and look for a solution. Even if it wears through the plastic cover, I don't think it would be able to hurt the cable at all. If the cable bust it's only $2.00 to replace it, gotta love that!

Put a regular metal washer between the cap and the crimp.

I've had a homemade one of that basic design for years. The pvc did wear threw the plastic on the cable, but never affected use. The crimp washer is a neat idea. A lot easier than wrapping wire tight, like I did...

I love making homemade equipment and you cannot beat the price on this one. Heading down to the hardware store right now.

since the rope is made of a metal cable, doesnt it hurt pretty good when you mess up? have you tried this thing barefoot at all?

Re: Homemade Jump rope for speed!!
Got mine put together last night and it turned out just great. My local hardware store only had 3/32" vinyl coated wire so it is a little bit heavier than 1/16" but it swings really well and is definitely fast. Thanks for a great idea.
