Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

guys sorry for not posting up earlier

here are some thought on Ultimate Advantage

- In 9 days of training there, I am closer to being able to call myself an athlete than ever at any previous point of my life
- My lifts all skyrocketed, and I expect some great PRs this week
- It is freaking awesome!

Here's my latest blog post on Friday's squat session there, enjoy!

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Thanks, Paulo!

If anyone reading takes anything away from my blog - I want it to be this:

I am not above average, nor am I special. I was not into sports, athletics, or human performance at all during my earlier years. I was not even great at CrossFit after doing it for a while for over a year. The key to everything, is dedication - to come in and get the work done. Once that falls into place, so will everyithng else.

I will also cross-post this to my facebook page for reference.

There are some things that I discovered yesterday don't mix well with training, and here's my blog post about that and yesterday's session overall:

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Summer at Ultimate Advantage is always when the intensity and difficulty seem to increase on a daily basis. The college kids are home, the high school kids are getting ready for preseason, there's new blood in the gym... I remember thinking last summer that there's no way it could get any more challenging than that. We were doing 4, 5, or 6 sets of 40, 50, or 60 burpees a night. I remember those especially. You could count the number of people in the gym after they had all left by the number of puddles left on the mat. And every night we all walked out of there and high-fived each other, thinking that we were working at our maximum effort.

And we were. Until this summer.

We don't do as many burpees this summer, but we're doing them one legged. We BEG Rick for regular burpees, something unheard of last summer. And the puddles have gotten bigger. And at the end of every night, we all walk out of there and high-five each other, thinking that we are working at our maximum effort.

But I know that next summer will be even tougher. I don't even want to think what fresh hell Rick will throw at us. I'll cross that bridge when we get there. In the meantime, I know that I am in the best shape of my life. I am the strongest I've ever been. I'm the fastest I've ever been. This Ultimate Athlete program is no joke (as Vlad's blog has outlined in great detail).

I know that people keep looking for a book or something of the sort about this program. It doesn't exist yet, but there are a few different places where you can get the information. The best place is Rick himself. He is more than willing to spend a few minutes on the phone with you, critique a video of your lifts, or whatever else you need him to do. He's also been all over the place holding seminars at different Crossfit gyms. If there's not one scheduled for a place near you, contact Rick and he will try to make one happen near you. It's a pretty neat experience to have someone with so much knowledge and such a busy schedule take a couple minutes to just talk to you. Take advantage of it!

My post on Tuesday's workout:

I thought that with Rick gone we would be in for an easy and pleasant evening at Ultimate Advantage. I was wrong..

Btw, to elaborate on Lauren's post - I got this wonderful opportunity to train there by just calling Rick, he really is a great person and truly dedicated to his craft.

Val, it's great your writing the blog. I have spoken with Rick via email and Skype and he is a great guy. It is great to read how it is training with the team on a daily basis.

I was looking into the online coaching he was hosting through his website but due to recently moving I couldn't commit financially. Hopefully the programme will be released in more detail or something similar to the online coaching again (I know it was only for a selected few). And one day have him over in the uk.

Keep up the blog, I look forward to your next post.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

The PRs just keep rolling in. I was SUPER excited last night- hit 405# sumo deadlift! Made the 400 club much ahead of schedule It was a super motivating night, all the athletes did incredibly well, everyone hit a big PR it seems, and the intensity was high. Everyone was yelling and cheering each other on, the music was loud, chalk was everywhere, and, of course, being slapped hard on the upper back before a lift by Rick certainly wakes you up! It may sound crazy to some, but it's one of the reasons training at UA is so productive. There's no comparison between that kind of motivating environment vs. training by yourself. Needless to say, I had a blast. I provide some more details on my blog as well @ www.icerunnerblog.com

I might also add that I hit this lift at the end of a long week (with LOTS of sprints and leg work) and I'm 12 pounds lighter since hitting my last deadlift 1RM. Yet I got an insane PR (55#) in a short period of time.

I also now feel very confident for the back squat portion for the Bobsled combine. After the deadlift, I hit 275 for 3 relatively easy, which is about 10# away from the perfect score on the combine. Heck yeah!

The first combine is getting very close now. I can't wait to see the results!
