Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Check out Rick's latest article over at Tabata Times:
http://www.tabatatimes.com/coachs-co...-needs-a-team/

He talks about how beneficial it is to split your athletes into teams based on needs. I know for all of us at Rick's place, we have to be with similarly skilled athletes. On the rare occasions I've had to work with his JV team due to scheduling conflicts, my numbers have sucked, and my motivation is in the toilet.

No 1RM lower body PRs lately (I think I haven't been doing enough lower back and ab work lately), but have PRed bench (270) , press (200), and incline bench (250) in the last month.

Moved into a new house and will have a SICK garage gym. Rogue squat cage and bumpers are on the way!

Loved the article and I thought it made a ton of sense. I know the box I most recently trained at had competitor's classes every Saturdays; now I know why.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Been hitting some big PRs lately! Today we had our max effort upper body day. I hit 245#x3 reps on bench pin press. That's a 70# PR since the last time I did this same movement (when I first began at Ultimate Advantage). If I wasn't a believer before, I definitely am now! After that, I then hit my previous 1RM bench press for 6 reps. All in 8 weeks time

This past Friday, I had a 20# PR on my sumo deadlift in 2 weeks time (now up to 335#) which has historically been WAY behind my conventional (there was once an 80# difference between the two). Then I hit 220x3 on safety bar front box squats. And anyone who's done that exercise can tell you how difficult it really is. The great thing is that these PRs came at the END of a long week of training. Performance is rapidly increasing. Exciting times!

And good luck on your meet, Paulo! Let us know how it goes.

I haven't been training for a couple of months but I just finished my basement gym and want to jump into this program. Could I just start following Golden Empires workouts? Or should I start elsewhere?

Following their site overall would be perfect. Just make sure you make some scales as you first get used to stuff. And sub in stuff that covers the same movement pattern/body part if you don't have the gear.

I imagine a lot of home gym's don't have inverse curl machines and reverse hypers.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Another successful night at Ultimate Advantage! Since it's Friday, we all know that means max lower. I hit 340# back squat - 15# more than my previous PR, and I got it at a lower body weight. My buddy Courtney Green also hit 340# tonight as well. (It's nice having another girl in the gym - now I have someone at my level to compete with!) Most of the other guys are hitting PR's as well. Rick and I were talking after tonight - his gym is truly a special place. (I think the word he used was "magical.") The energy is just so intense, you can't help but hit new PR's every week.

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

I'll second Lauren's post! It was a great night tonight, everyone is just smashing PRs. I pretty easily hit 340# box squat which was 40# over my all-time PR (and WAY more than what I was consistently hitting on my own when I used to train by myself). My body is just moving better since I first started and Rick ingrains in you the proper biomechanics, no matter what you're doing. It really does make a big difference between lifting big or nothing at all.

Every week better than the last!

Re: My day with Rick Scarpulla of Ultimate Advantage (Westside 4 Athletes)

Did my Tough Mudder this past weekend and had a blast. 10.5 miles and 20 obstacles in Beaver Creek, CO.

Didn't do any running up until three weeks ago and still killed it. I could barely walk last year due to lower leg cramps, but this year no cramps and I had the energy and stamina to run whenever I wanted to (combo of better training and nutrition). I even kept up with my bother-in-law who has done a number of marathons and 100+ mile bike events. I'm also 20 pounds lighter than when I did it last year, but just as strong due to Rick's program which made hurling myself and others over obstacles easier.

Also, due to the mental aspect Rick stresses I approached this year's course differently than last year. Last year I just wanted to survive, but this year I attacked the course.

It doesn't seem to matter what sport you're into, or at what level, the Ultimate Athlete program flat out works. I can't wait to get back in the gym and get ready for whatever comes next.

Here's an interview Rick did this past weekend up in Canada. He talks about his Ultimate Athlete program, how to gain mental toughness, what CrossFitters are missing, and on and on. Definitely worth a watch. (WFS)
