What are some exercises that one can do with a sandbag that can't be done with weights?
I can think of sandbag carries. Also I have been doing woodchoopers on my basement floor and against the wall. I will also throw the sandbag against the wall from about 15 feet away, run and drag it back and repeat as fast as I can. Anything else? |

Overhead throws. Pretty much anything you could do with a medicine ball!

Neal,
I just carried 80 lbs 200 meters 3 times. I have this to say...ugh. I'm working toward the mile starting today. Everything is feeling it. |

I like what I call the "girl carry". Hoist the bag up and hold it in both arms like your carrying a girl. Sort of like the arms are in the top of a barbell curl position, the bag in the space between forearms and biceps and resting on chest. I like to use a 120 pound bag. I also like my girls that weight or a bit less:-) Walk with it. The real challege is the weight against the chest makes breathing difficult....
It's a nice end of the workout finisher... (Message edited by rogersmith on February 04, 2006) |

I flip my back for distance (like a tire) end over end.
One arm carries are fun too (one arm, holding the bag against the hip). I dub these: 'Keg stealers' for reasons I will not go into here. |

I like "keg stealers" - though in my mind I'd always thought of them as "kid carries" - since that's how you carry a tired toddler or older kid.
now, squats while kid carrying - that's an interesting exercise - and one that comes up in real life. also "lamb or calf carries" where you carry the bag in front of you, squeezing in the ends with your arms to hold the bag. |

Uhh, if you called them "Kid Stealers" you'd probably be arrested.
but it would be funny (and isn't that all that matters sometimes?). |
