Our world today is very different in terms of pollutants, electromagnetic radiation, and even the quantity/quality of nutrients in our whole foods. Might we need more nutrients than our heavily compromised food system can provide? Might we benefit from higher intakes of nutrients than what even highly nutrient-dense food can supply, especially in our environmentally-compromised modern world? I venture to guess that the answer to both questions is yes. This affects the whole issue, IMO.

Certain foods can be used *as* supplements (ie. cilantro for heavy metal removal). This is nothing new. I also lean very heavily towards whole-food based supplements. As we know from the CR diets, if one is getting proper nutrition, then the fewer unnecessary macronutrients that are ingested will result in increased longevity. It's just less wear and tear on our biochemical system.

Most of the junk sold in supplement stores should be called drugs. "Pharmaceutically Pure". Yeah, that means it's basically a drug, folks!
Coca plant + processing = white powder (cocaine)
Sugar cane + processing = white powder (table sugar)
I don't even want to guess where most of the "pure" powders sold in these stores comes from.
Both compounds listed above are powerful drugs--I know which one more people are addicted to worldwide! I won't waste my time discussing the merits of the two substances, nor am I saying that all "drugs" are inherently bad. Most of the multis and other supplements people are taking are drugs (jammed into a tablet or capsule), nothing else, and many are taking these drugs for reasons other than optimizing health!

Anyway, get your diet straight first. That means really straight. Then, if all of your health concerns aren't rectified, then consider looking beyond that. If your primary goal is something other than health, supplement away--you've already relegated health to the back shelf. My role as a physician with people who choose to do this is to let them know the road they're heading down and try to slow the breakdown as much as possible.

I agree with Larry that nutrition, exercise, sleep, etc. ought to be the number one priority. However, I equally agree with Lewis (for basically the reasons given by Garrett) that some supplementation is important. I totally disagree with Larry's suggestion that supplements are only for elite level athletes. Anyone interested in longevity and overall health (regardless of how good their diet is) will likely benefit from some supplements. [I take a mixed tocopheral vitamin E, selenium, fish oil, and vitamin D seasonally.] I suspect, however, that Larry had a somewhat different set of supplements in mind when he made is comment.

I really like this one -

It says O.J. (yes, THAT ex-wife murderin' O.J.) used juice plus a decade ago! Maybe there is something to this juice plus stuff! Look how well O.J. was able to use a knife with that debilitating arthritis he had.... daaaannnnng...

Recovering alcoholics should consider a Milk Thistle product, and maybe something like Liv52.

Supplementation is funny.

In most cases, performance supplements won't work unless your lifestyle is dialed in and your training is dialed in.

I'd say that creatine and the ephedrine/caffiene stack are two things that pack enough punch so you can see a difference without having anything dialed in, though.

Art D is a big advocate of L-Glutathione, although I'm not exactly sure what it is used for. I just take it!

Supps are really a waste of money. Its basically a multi-billion dollar biz that preys on the lazy, the ones looking for the easy way out.

And sadly, they're are many out there.

Eva, i have sent you an e-mail.

Ger, what is your understanding on how Juice Plus+ the business works? Because it seems to me that somoene has told or you have soley read an article saying that Juice Plus+ uses multi-level marketing and you're running with that. I personally know that Juice Plus+ is not, and if you did some research to find out how the company NSA works apart from that one article bagging out the product, you will agree. And if in that same sentance you where refering to Juice Plus+ as a multi-vitamin, you REALLY have no idea of what Juice Plus+ is and i would seriously recomend looking into it before making such remarks.

Using a story made by OJ about Juice Plus+ and artritis being a lead reason to not persue looking into the product anymore is pretty lame. That guy would have said anything to get himself out of being convicted. I'm not saying he wasn't taking it, he probably was, but Juice Plus+ has never said "Juice Plus+ will cure arthritis", so why suddenly it should in this case and because he said it didn't work obviously means Juice Plus+ is a usless product?

Robert, that article at the top says:
Claims, Benefits: Boosts the immune system, provides antioxidants, contains all the nutrients in seven to ten fruits and vegetables.

Well, yes! The company doesn't claim it does that, they claim the research has SHOWN it! (and its 15 servings of fruits and vegetables in a serve) Research study after research study has proven that it does! Independant studies mind you, it's not a claim, it's the truth, and if you ate fruits and vegetables you would get all those results too. That article is bull, the Juice+ was spiked with additional vitamin C and E? When you have a study that is being researched at Gold Standard there is no way in the world the product is going to be anything other than what it is. And in that, if the addition of those synthetic and isolated (im presuming) vitamin C, E, beta carotene and folic acid where added and showed NO results, then why would anyone go and take a multi vitamin suppliment?

Juice Plus+ is not a suppliment for consuming fruits and vegetables, the company even states that it is the next best thing, NOT the best thing. Nothing will ever be better than eating the real thing. Juice Plus+ is the nutrients of fruits and veggies and 2 grains (no traces of protiens celiacs can react too), there is no sugar, water or salt, no herbicides, pesticides, fungus or bacteria, each batch made is tested one part per billion for those things. High quality research has shown that Juice Plus+ is bio-available (gets into the blood stream) and has significant improvements in all the stuff Taha mentioned such as immune strengthening and DNA damage. 14 Gold Standard studies are underway now, find me another product that has that much research done on it. Because if only ONE of the studies done on Juice Plus+ showed that is was usless or bad for you, it wouldn't even be on the market today, if-fact, it wouldnt even have had ONE published study. Instead, you have the top doctors around the world giving Juice Plus+ to clients, personal trainers are using it, physiotherapists, chiropractors, nutritionists, skin and beauty specialists ALL recomending Juice Plus+ to their patients, i know Dr Loren Cordain recomends it too. All you need to look at is the quality of research done on Juice Plus+ to know its not bull.

I would recomend reading up on the benefits of Juice Plus+ and know that side of the story, rather than searching for bad things about it and reading articles that make up stories about the product. Because every product in the world will have negativity placed against it, but if thats all you surround yourself with then thats what your going to believe.

I'm happy to provide anyone with more information if they are interested..

Thanx for all the advice.

I have found that some supplements work for me,

whether it be a meal replacement fat burner

caffine-packed nerve shocker

I've had both positive and negative results,but

I had convienence, and I like that

I wouldn't call myself lazy(my daily routine)

The reason I posted this question in the first place is to help understand if supplements such as these worked (signifigantly improved performance) or if they just had great marketing.

Now I know supplements can be considered a very vague term, but to me in my my own psychee if I take a little blue pill and have a great workout

Then that supplement works for me.

I like the convienence of a powerbar or protien shake versus buying fast-food at the airport(My Workplace)

I know I'm doing ALMOST the best I can.

I'm going to have junkfood 1 or 2 days a week

But that doesn't replace my daily cravings for TEQUEILA

Nothing does, thats a battle I have to deal with everyday

But, I am making the best effort I can to improving my appearance, and staminia. I know I could improve much more through strict food intake, but that level of discipline isn't in my picture right now.

So if anybody has had any positive results with ANY supplements, than those would be greatly appreciated if shared.

Clarification: Supplements which improve health, ie vitamins, minerals, fish oil, teas, etc. I am ok with...they are found in nature, modern food is stripped of some of these resources, so go for a sane manner. I'm sticking to my guns with performance supplements. Creatine, glutamine, NO2, fat burning pills, blah, blah, blah. First off, people who take these have no base line to compare to. I start working out and watching what I eat; I'm also taking three supplements. Do you think my initial gains are from the exercise and diet or from the supplements? Easy answer, but newbies always believe the supplements helped them make their gains. Supplements are a crutch, "I don't have to eat well because I'm taking Super X fat burner." Your biggest gains will come from exercise, nutrition, and rest (PERIOD). Performance supplements cost a crap load of money, with marginal results. By the way Lewis, my lifestyle is not optimal...I'm a cop work and commute long hours (2:20 commute every day), married, have two kids, teach a CF classes 2 days a week, coach football, and teach martial arts, I still manage to eat 5 Zone balanced meals a day and do the WOD 3/1, busy just doesn't cut it...optimize what you can prior to taking shortcuts.

Here's my supplement regime if you could call it that. Its secondary to what others have mentioned above meaning dialed in Zone/Paleo in a 9 hour IF timeframe, as much sleep as I can possibly get, consistent workouts.

1)Trader Joe's SuperCrusade Multi-Vitamins
2)Twinlabs's Multi-Mineral Caps
3)Carlson's Fish Oil-approx. 5gms daily
4)Egg white protein powder(only when I really need a quick meal)

I recently ordered some coconut oil and will add that to the fat intake.

I view the supplements as a way to ensure that the bases are covered if only in my imagination. This is working well for me.
