I can get a Hampton bar (w/ needle bearings) for $110. I am on a very constrained budget. Is this a good deal and will I destroy the bar if I drop it with bumpers?

Thanks,

Joe

The bar will be just fine if dropped with bumpers.

Yes, concur with Rosey, it should be fine. Ivanko has a very interesting article on their website about bar strength and how to break/bend bars. The upshot is that what breaks bars is dropping them across a bench. You should check out the technical articles on the Ivanko website.

Too bad Ivanko bars aren't as good as their articles. The decidely non-standard spacing of the knurling rings drives Olympic lifters crazy.

Bar steel varies from 65k P.S.I. steel up to 220k P.S.I. (P.S.I. is the amount of pressure it takes to put a permanent bend in a bar.) Price varies from $65 to $700+. The Hampton bars are usually a good middle-of-the-road bar.

I went and read the articles. Very interesting. Oly bars Qs seem to come up often. Those articles would be good for CF FAQ.
