Monkey Bars

I am pretty good at Pull UPs, (I can do 17 dead hang strict overhand). I can do 20 ring dips, and I like to do L sits with rings as well.

I was playing around with my kids at the playground and I went to go and do some swinging on the monkey bars, and man did it hurt my left shoulder. That was really hard to do. I could only go to one side, and it hurt so much when I put the weight on the one shoulder that I couldn't go back.

How can I build the shoulder strength/endurance to be able to do this. I do have poor mobility, is that the issue? Man I remember as a kid swinging all over the place, skipping multiple bars, and just being a monkey. I want that ability back, if that isn't functional I don't know what is.

Re: Monkey Bars

I think this is similar to kipping pull-ups and I think you point out a big problem; not everyone has the requisite shoulder strength to do them safely.

I thought I was fairly strong from my shoulder press numbers but attempting kipping pull-ups gave me a lot of shoulder pain.

I've been spending time working on body weight strength (ala - Overcoming Gravity, Steve Low). I've been rebuilding myself so I can start doing these things safely.

Remember, it's a core to extremity thing and any weakness along the chain is susceptible to pain/damage.

I wanna swing from the monkey bars some day too
