Front squats with smith machine?

There is no rack for my barbell where I work out. For front squats - should I clean the weight or use the useless piece of sh!$ smith machine that they have.

Thank you

I always power clean the weight up. It seriouly limits my load though.

Re: Front squats with smith machine?

Chris, if there is a bench nearby and you're a shorty like me you can use it as a rack. You'll just be squatting it out of the rack... might help a little bit.

Re: Front squats with smith machine?

Thanks guys. Chris, not even a bench with a rack. I posted my question too late so I worked out before any replies. I did clean the weight. The gym doesn't have bumper plates either so I'm always scared of dropping it. Anyway, I feel like I got a decent workout even without max effort. Thanks again.

If you can get sawhorses into the gym - it'll give you a place for bottom position front/backsquats and also safety holds for about 20-40 bucks.

Re: Front squats with smith machine?

I wouldn't advise using the bench press stand unless you can actually stand under it. The bench I have has a bar that keeps from picking up the weight in the rack position. I have done that with lower weights, but the compromised position would seem to make this set-up dangerous.

Instead, clean it. I clean with metal plates and a standard bar and haven't had much trouble with cleans. Besides, if you bail out of a squat clean, the bar doesn't have far to go to the ground. This set-up will work depending on your clean/front squat strength. They're close enough in my case that I can do heavy front squats by cleaning, but this might not work for you. If so, then I guess you're just going to have to get better at cleans.

Regardless, the smith machine should be avoided.
