From Personal Trainer to S&C Coach?

Hi all,

How difficult would it be to go from being a NSCA certified personal trainer to getting a job as a strength and conditioning coach?

Would a school hire someone who didn't have an exercise science degree but does have a Master's degree, a CPT, and a CSCS (which I don't have yet)?

Is an unpaid internship necessary to break into this field?

Any information about this topic would be appreciated.

The CSCS should be enough to get you a S&C job without an exercise science degree.

many Universities have a minimum requirement posted on their employment page. They usually read: BS/MS in exercise science, CSCS,CPR and first aid, and field experience.

What they don't say is: who do you know?

Many GA's apply for the position, but the run to the top is tough and political. And the pay is around 30K a yr. Not much for about 60 plus hours a week.

Most likely you will need to volunteer or start as a lowly paid intern and work your way up. You will need your CSCS and I'd leave the CPT off of your resume. If your willing to work for peanuts for a few years and your willing to move anywhere in the country you can finds ways to advance. If you are the head strength & conditinoing coach at a large conference school (sec, big 10, ect) you'll make over 100K. There are well paid asst positions as well. I am at UC Riverside in the Big West conference and make 55K and I am very happy. It's a great profession.
