Really bad air: To WOD or not to WOD?

So far this winter SLC has been plagued by high pressure and temperature inversions. The result is crappy skiing and even worse air quality in the valleys. Right now we officially have the worst air in the nation with an air quality index of a whopping 142 and PM2.5's are over 60 ug/m3 (the EPA cutoff for "unhealthy" air is 35 ug/m3 ). Improvement is not expected until at least this weekend.

When it is this bad, is it even worth doing a WOD?

I dunno... it's up to personal preference if it really bothers you. I do know that Washington DC's air quality is fairly poor year round, and its not going to stop me from working out

Re: Really bad air: To WOD or not to WOD?

I just did a quick review of DC's air quality data for 2009. I only found four days where the AQI exceeded 100 and it never exceeded 116. We have been over 130 for the last 3 days and will probably break 150 today through wednesday at least.

Yeah, that's pretty nasty.

I don't worry about "unhealthy for sensitive groups" air quality.

When it gets up to "unhealthy for everyone," I don't workout outdoors. Indoors with controlled air should be fine, though.

Note also that most of my experience with bad air is summers in Boston, when bad air is usually accompanied by insane heat and humidity. Your situation is a little different.

Is indoor air really any better? I sure don't have a high-performance air filtration system in my house, and I doubt your average furnace filter does much for PM2.5's.

I am definitely not looking for an excuse to not workout here, I got the flu Christmas week and am playing catchup as best I can.

This pic is from 2007, but it's exactly what it looks like right now

The EPA thinks so:

Their recommendation that people stay indoors on bad air days is particularly based on ozone levels. Particles are a different issue, of course.
