Push Press vs Push Jerk efficiency

Hi all.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Yesterday I was doing the C&J ladder (1 C&J the first minute, 2 C&J the second minute... 10 C&J the tenth minute, etc). I was doing this Grace style, "ground to overhead anyhow". I was using power cleans and push presses by catching the bar in a quarter squat and push pressing from there. I figure the push presses are more efficient than push jerks concerning cardiovascular demands, and my shoulders weren't fatiguing. Some others disagree and argue the push jerk would be more efficient.

The top competitors at the CF games all used the squat clean/thruster combo, but they could have done a thruster/jerk by dipping back under the bar to catch it overhead.

The question is: If you can manage push presses during Grace or another "ground to overhead anyhow" workout, what is more efficient, push presses or push jerks?

Re: Push Press vs Push Jerk efficiency

If the weight is light enough - push press is more efficient.

Re: Push Press vs Push Jerk efficiency

agreed...it depends on how heavy the weight is for you...if you can do the push press w/o struggling then its more efficient

Push pressing is faster than Push Jerking, thus when competing for time you would prefer to push press a weight. If you watch actually the top competitors at the CF games started doing squat clean into a thruster, but by the last few reps most if not all of them had evolved into squat clean, push jerks because they no longer had the strength to muscle out a push press.

So Push Jerk is more efficient for energy expenditure, but Push Press is faster...
