How to do Push Press, Push Jerk and Jerks? Bar behind head? or in front?

So yea where's the best place to put the bar? Behind the neck, like a back squat, or in front of the neck, like a front squat?

"it depends" You will probably get a more authoritative answer from someone else but I think.

For the most part IMO you should use the front position.
#1 it is the receiving position from the clean
#2 the second part of a clean and jerk
#3 I can only get it behind my neck if I take it off of a rack

Behind the neck may be helpful if learning the move as the bar is in the correct line "in the frontal plane" with very little need to adjust body after drive. Some people (not me) may be able to get more weight overhead with behind the neck start position.

I never work behind the next on presses or pulls because it puts the shoulders in a more unstable position which could lead to impingement. You can protect yourself against this by being very conscious of keeping your scapulae pulled back. This should prevent the shoulder joint from moving forward and out of line with your head. I hope this makes some sense...

There are reasons and times to do push presses and jerks from behind the neck, but the WOD is hardly ever one of those times.

Not to take the thread off topic, but I have the same problem, I'm not sure if this is due to shoulder flexibility issue or not. I did "The Bear" the other day, and had a really hard time lowering the weight behind my head after the first push press. Pressing out of the position feels fine - I just can't get there myself without feeling like I'm risking injury.
