Shoulder Mobility Problems

Hey gang,

So, I was practicing air squats last night and I realized I had a major problem. You know how you are supposed to hold your hands straight above your head to keep the back straight? Well, I can't do that easily. I can barely lock my elbows and I can't hold my arms there long without them coming forward. I feel like they are always tilted a few degrees forward from my torso.

How should I address this? I do wall (scap) slides, lots of chest/shoulder stretching, tricep stretching, but I feel like this isn't addressing the issue that my arms just don't go far enough back, or towards my ears, if that makes sense.

Thanks!

Re: Shoulder Mobility Problems

This is the best shoulder-opening exercise that I've tried to date. I had the same issues, but I added this to my warm-up every day and it's totally helped to increase my shoulder flexibility when in a narrower grip. I've noticed significant improvement in my OHS, PJ and arms-up air squat.

Awesome. I already do shoulder dislocations (forgot to list it!), but I'll have to add that whole warm-up into it. Thanks muchly.

Re: Shoulder Mobility Problems

find a flat surface at waist level (sturdy table is fine).

bend at hip (knee bend is ok) til upper body is approx parallel to ground, and lay hands flat on edge of table. hands should be slightly wider than shoulder width.

press down with hands.

while pressing down, bend more at hip to strech the shoulder.

relax and then stretch farther (applying no pressure with hands this time).

for reasons some smart person will be able to explain, contract/relax stretching is a slick maneuver. similar approach is good for tight hamstrings.

Re: Shoulder Mobility Problems

I've been ironing out some shoulder mobility issues recently - I generally add a liberal amount of arm circles and shoulder dislocates into the warm-up and during rest periods. Seems to be working out.
