Re: Bone Growth Stimulator

I didn't have the bone growth stimulator for the first 6 months. I was referring to the last time I broke that bone. Late in 1998 I shattered the first 2 inches of the bone into 5 pieces, had surgery immediately and was finally put on a bone growth stimulator(electro-magnetic field) after 4-5 months of little to no bone growth. 6 months after that it was healed. This time I didn't opt for surgery, and 6 months later, with little to no bone growth, I'm on the bone growth stimulator(ultrasound). I'm still thinking about surgery when I talk to the podiatrist on monday. I hate getting cut on but I'm pretty sure I don't want to be "out" for 12-18 months, because if this bone growth stimulator doesn't work that's what will happen. So it looks like this:

15 Dec 1998 - Broke 5th metatarsal into 5 pieces
18 Dec 1998 - Surgery w/ 3 screws
May 1999 - no significant bone growth (issues BGS)
Nov 1999 - bone healed

18 Dec 2010 - Broke 5ht metatarsal (Jones fracture)
14 May 2010 - no signifcant bone growth (issued BGS)

two things can happen
First
Oct-ish 2010 - bone healed
I'd be happy with this
Second
Jul 2010 - no significant bone growth, surgery w/ 1 screw, continue BGS
Jan 2011 - bone healed
Not sure I want to wait until July to find out that the BGS isn't working and then have to do surgery and wait another 5-6 months to be healthy. That's why I'm thinking about opting for surgery now, instead of waiting. I also had a pretty ****ty experience with the last podiatrist that operated on me.

Re: Bone Growth Stimulator

That's a pretty long history for such a small bone.

At this point, if it were my foot, I'd say screw it....pun intended.

Re: Bone Growth Stimulator

Everett, I was really considering it, but then I talked to the wife about it.
The Mrs. is concerned about me getting on it operated while I am here in GA. She's in TX and having her out here for part of the recover just isn't an option. We will have to see.

Re: Bone Growth Stimulator

Was told by the doc to limit amount of time spent on my feet or he'd put me in a non-wight bearing cast and a set of crutches...

...not my idea of a good time.

Re: Bone Growth Stimulator

Saw the doc today, the bone growth stimulator seems to be working, there is significant bone growth between last visit to see him and now, and a remarkable difference from first visit to now.
