What New Movements Will We See This Year?

Primarily in the open. I am curious as to what you guys think. I hear a lot going around about bar muscle ups, hspu, and (maybe) pistol squats in the open this year. What do you guys think?

Also what new movements do you think we will see at regionals and the games this year?

I doubt there will be anything crazy/new in the Open. They want that to be an "inclusive" competition and introducing totally new movements goes against that vision. Any movements that require even a decent amount of skill (HSPU, pistols, double unders, muscle ups etc) will be buried in a WOD behind a basic movement. The new stuff won't surface until regionals, at least in my opinion anyways.

I'd like to see a combined movement, like bar-facing burpees and snatch. Or burpee + bar muscle up.

But the workouts need to be designed so that a beginning crossfitter can try it, and still be challenging enough to be able to have some meaningful separation between even the best crossfitters.

Re: What New Movements Will We See This Year?

Take a look at what the last two years has been and it will give you a good idea of what you will see again this year. 2011 to 2012 most of the movements were repeats and I doubt that will change much this year.

I expect we will see clean & jerks similar to last year's snatch ladder or like2011 where it was an AMRAP of 165# C & J. You will see muscle ups, double unders, pull ups (expect the Fran ladder or another crappy repeat), wall balls, thrusters, possibly some shoulder to overhead, snatches (my guess is medium/light for reps), power cleans, deadlifts, OHS and box jumps. We have yet to see much squatting save for the OHS in the Open & front squats at the 2011 games so I wouldn't expect that there will be much if any.

Whatever they throw out will need to be straight forward, inclusive and relatively easy to judge yet still a good test so that the right athletes move on.

Here is a guess, and I will be wrong.....15 min AMRAP of 15 - 95#power clean and 30 double unders, or something like it. Regardless I will be very cautious with the events this year of I even do them.

They had bar facing burpees combined with OHS two years ago correct?

Re: What New Movements Will We See This Year?

Yes, in 2011 there was an OHSQ/bar facing burpee WOD.

I think we'll see more of the same box jumps, pull ups, snatch, cleans, KB swings....the bread and butter movements.

I think the skilled movements will be bar muscle ups and/or handstand pushups.

I'd love to see some kind of rock climbing at the Games this year; I think it would be very exciting to see the top guys use different strategies and techniques and going at top speed head-to-head!

Re: What New Movements Will We See This Year?

For the Games, I think it would be cool to have the guys do an iron cross on the rings for time. The women might not be able to do that, so maybe a iron cross position holding dumbells.

For the Games, I think it is also important to make the events interesting to watch.
