kettlebell vs. dumbell

What's the difference in doing kettlebell swings vs. dumbell swings. I didn't want to purchase the kettlebells if I could just use db. any thoughts/comments???

Nothing official from me but I've tried both when gym's haven't had Kettlebells. I know that this is a prosterior chain movement, but I'm unable to find a way to swing a dumbbell without stressing one hand more than the other. Eventually my fingers are killing me, especially on the heavier sets. If you can deal with the numb fingers and maybe swap your hands around halfway through (to keep even stress on both arms), I guess you could make do.

I'd be buying Kettlebells though.

You might not run into this with swings, but lets say you're doing snatches or holding kettlebells in a rack position in front of your chest. You want to keep your wrist straight without breaking it back. That's the defacto position with a dumbbell, but the kettlebell will make you fight for it and you'll get a much stronger grip because of it.

For DB swings I prefer to hold the "bell" not the handle, it works even with larger DBs when the hand cant grasp both sides of the DB. Just hook your fingers over the lip toward the handle. As for cleans the rack position is very different, Snatches are more similar but you dont have to worry about the KB hitting the forearm.
