Looks like there's a new player on the block, Werk San USA. Seems they are the new official barbell of USA Weightlifting. They have the new 2kg and 1kg iron plates, as well as the hard-to-find 5kg rubber training bumpers. There competition-quality gear isn't really much cheaper than Eleiko, but it's good to have more options for the consumer. It used to be there were only three I.W.F. certified barbell companies in the world: Eleiko, Uesaka, and York. York might have dropped their certification, but it looks like there are a few Chinese companies that are going to enter the market. I think the official barbell of the 2008 Olympic in Beijing will be a new Chinese barbell set. Zhang Barbells, or something like that I think?

I might get a pair of the 5kg bumpers, we'll see.

Lincoln, Kevin A. linked to these Zhang Kong sets a few threads back:

Might be cool to get a set of 25s from Turkey, 20s from China, 15s from Sweden, etc. - as long as the hubs all match...

I have been scouting for a set of 1kg and 2 kg iron plates for a while-- and these look less expensive than the York plates. Thanks, Lincoln.

I tried drilling and grinding a pair of 1.25kg plates down to 1kg - no dice. After much labor and a $3.99 grinding bit they now weigh 1.20kg each...

Mike, that is awesome info--a complete set for 50 bucks! Thanks. I was just getting ready to order some bands from them anyway.

I looked on their site and didn't see any plates in kilos. I sent them an email to see if they had 2kg and 1kg plates...

What kind of bumpers are those at the bottom of the Werk San USA > Training page. The black ones. They look like the BFS ones because they have brass inserts but they are in kilos. Nice price too.
