Head ache increases with heart rate????

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I developed an increasingly sever head ache during a workout on 4-30-12, I had to stop WOD. Ever sense then I have had a low grade head ache constantly and it gets increasingly sever as soon as my heart rate goes up. Simply teaching members how to do double unders is enough to get it increasing. I'm only doing short examples.

Not one to turn to the internet for medical advise I have already seen my primary care doctor who didn't like the sound of things and ordered an MRI. Had MRI and results came back normal. No aneurysm, tumors or other physical damage was detected.

He wants me to see a neurologist, which I'm not against. I figure I would post about it here because if anyone would have experience with issues revolving around high heart rate it would be CrossFitters.

Anyone had or know someone who had similar symptoms?

Re: Head ache increases with heart rate????

Could it just be an exertion headache?

These are pretty common and harmless (though that won't stop a typical doctor from ordering a barrage of random tests). I suffered one mid-WOD last year and then it would come back with any form of exertion for a week or so after.

From what I remember of what I read about it, it isn't fully understood by medical science but it is possibly the result of some tightness in the tissue around the neck. I did some simple mobility work around that area to loosen things up. I don't know if that actually made it go away or if it went away on its own.

If it worsens from craning your neck while doing things eliminate that.

And this may help

I have had a similar problem and find if I really focuse on my breathing throughout my workout it helps, especially when using heavy loads.

Yeah, might it be just due to you overexerting yourself?

That's what I thought - I had to force myself to REALLY pay attention to my breathing.

This being said, if there's ANY question, go to the doc - do not pass go, don't perform 200 burpees. Not something to mess around with.

Re: Head ache increases with heart rate????

Pretty common story for a coital/exertion headache. There are quite a few threads on these boards talking about them as well. Stretching, Massage, Water, maybe Chiro, rest from activities that aggrevate it including bouncing and heavy exertion. Give it some time to go way and try to take preventive measures in the future.

Re: Head ache increases with heart rate????

I use to get really bad headaches when I rose my heart rate (about 3 years ago). If first happened when I was just doing bench press, it felt like a really really bad migrane half way though my set. It was so bad, I just left the gym after being there for 10minutes.

After that when ever, I rose my heart rate or lifted weights (puts a bit of pressure in you head), I would get really bad head aches. Happend to me for 3 months straight.

When I talked to my doctor, he said it was most likly due to me taking supplements (creatine before my workout and protain after). The reason why, is because supplements are not regualated that well, so a lot of harmful metals can make it into your supplement and into your system after taking it every day.

So I went off supplements and started taking percription bata blockers for a year. Bata blockers help slow your heart beat down (warning, they are dangarous if taken too much). But they really helped when I had a headache, and still wanted to run.

And right now Im no longer on supplements and bata blockers, and I am just fine! doing crossfit and olympic lifting every day.

Im not saying this is your same situation. But this is what happend to me.
