Crossfit logo design

I've been looking around the web and of course the crossfit discussion boards. My question is for those who have a crossfit box, how did you come up with your logo/brand design?
Did you create it yourself?
Did you get a friend to do it for free/charge?
Did you go to a design company and if so, which one? how much?

I can keep going with the questions but i'll leave it like that. Any information in regards to creating your own crossfit logo will be highly appreciated.

Thanks to all in advance.

Re: Crossfit logo design

I designed our logo and overall brand/theme

If your going the DIY road I would suggest going to the library or the local book store and reading through some design books (plenty of pictures).

Take some time to learn the basic's of design language. It will help you with the feel of your brand and thus your logo.

Do some research and look at companies that you like (based on feel and looks) and try to link why they did it that way (colors, size, design, etc.) with what you researched (library, bookstore, etc.)

If you go with a professional, do your homework, if they don't have an online portfolio ask for some samples via email. If they are great at what they do, expect to pay for quality work.

The best of both worlds would be if you had a client who was a graphic designer and work out some sort of trade.

Re: Crossfit logo design

I desired a cool logo too, but have held off for the time being...just moving into a new box is enought to deal with for now...BUT, a good friend of mine is a "branding" expert and had this advice for me:
1) Keep it REALLY SIMPLE.
2) Make sure it looks good BOTH big and small sized. (ie:don't have a lot of little details that confuse the image and get lost when the size is reduced.
3) Make sure it looks good both in color and in B&W. In fact, few or no colors are preferable.
Remember, you're just trying to make your name memorable, you should not try to display all that your program is or encompasses. That's what your web site is for. I mean, what do "Golden Arches" have to do with Burgers...but you remember the name!!!!
For now, i'm just using my Affiliate name. Waiting for a real brainstorm logo...so i may be waiting a while...lol
Just thought i'd pass these insights on bro! peace, and Merry Christmas!

Re: Crossfit logo design

Check out http://www.petejoison.com/ (w/f/s).

I used him for my logo, www.CrossFitFairbanks.com (w/f/s). he has his portfolio on his site to go through. He's very very affordable and gets it done pretty fast. I emailed him in words what I was looking for, he sketched it up, I ok'd it, then he sent me a couple different variations to choose from.

Re: Crossfit logo design

If you are going to have Tshirts made, see if they will do a logo for you and include the artwork with the shirt order. Check Google images and CrossFit web pages for general ideas. Print them up and take them to the Tshirt place. Their artist can work with you on creating a logo.
