pre-workout nutrition for 6am workout

I am relatively new to crossfit...I've been doing some of the exercises off and on for about 3-4 months. I just joined a crossfit gym, and my workout time will be at 6 am, so I'll have to get up by 5 am. What should I be eating in prep for my workout that won't try to make a reappearance during my workout?

Re: pre-workout nutrition for 6am workout

From personal experience, I find working out on an empty stomach works best for me with early workouts like this. Especially with such a short time between meal and workout. After I'm done I have a good breakfast. Never had any ill effect strength wise, energy wise, etc. Can't speak for everyone, but that's what works for me.

Re: pre-workout nutrition for 6am workout

yeah, definitely empty stomach...i train at 6 am most days. if I know it is going to a particularly long WOD the next day, like Murph, I will try to do a little bit of carb loading at dinner the night before and have a snack before bed.

i found the food is less of an issue at 6 am than just getting the body going. but I think i have been adapting to it.

I vote for eating after. Might be a good idea to have some fluids before - water or coffee.

I head to the 0600 workout M-W-F. Personally, I need something in my stomach to get me going. Generally I go for one zone block of cheese, maybe a block of fruit and a short cup of coffee on the 10 minute drive to the gym. Bacon, Eggs, and Fruit after the WOD.

I'm one of those CFers who needs to eat before the WOD, no matter how close. Today I was in a rush and just had about 8 almonds and a bottle or two of water. A hard boiled egg is a small (in terms of the space it takes up in your stomach and amount of calories), portable, and satisfying solution IMO.

I usually eat a banana before my 6am workout. I've also tried some apple juice with whey protein. Both worked well for me.

A banana works great for me in the rare event that I workout that early.

I try to eat a full meal afterward though.
