Stitches

I had some tissue removed from my right lower back yesterday, resulting in 15 stitches. The doctor told me no exercise for a minimum of two weeks until the stitches come out, and then probably another week or two after that.

I just can't imagine doing nothing but walking for a month. The concern is that I will twist the wrong way and rip the stitches or the healing tissue under the stitches.

Before everyone responds with "follow doctor’s orders" I just have a question.

I've seen MMA fighters, football players, and other professional athletes get stitches and go right back to their sport the next day.

Since I'm not in the medical profession, is the month layoff for precautionary reasons? If so, then why don't the athletes need the same amount of time?

Re: Stitches

Also it depends where the sutures are as fas as activity. Most injuries where they return-to-play immediately, the sutures are on the brow, chin, or some other not-mobile area.

Skin that moves and stretches a lot is a different story. Depth is also an issue, as Frank mentioned, as is the length of the incision.

Re: Stitches

At the time of the original post they were in for about 24 hours. I took off until yesterday, where I did a light workout making sure not to stretch the skin or bend at the waist.
