What weight ball for slams??

I know this has come up but I don't seem to be able to find the exact answer I need. I'm looking for a medicine ball to do ball slams, and also to do the exercise where you start out on your back with the ball over your head, swing forward, stand up and then slam the ball. I'm not in great shape/just starting. Can anyone guide me through all the different balls to the one I want, and recommend a weight? Seems like I've seen recommendations for everything from about 6 lbs to 20 lbs. I'm about 175, 5'11".

Thanks very much, and sorry if this is a familiar question.

Re: What weight ball for slams??

The weight depends on your strength and ability, but if you are gonna slam it, I suggest a D-ball instead of the Dynamax medicine ball. Or a homemade one.

We did the Situp-Stand/Jump-Slamball yesterday as part of the WOD at CF HEL, it was fun. Weights ranged from 8-20# on the D-balls.

Re: What weight ball for slams??

We start men with 16LB D-balls then go all the way up to 30LB. Coach Burgener showed us a variation he calls the "Wood Chopper": Stop the slam at the bottom and explode to jump. This will add a great deal of life to your med-ball. Our women use the 16LB for workouts once they ramp up from an 8, it is a quick transition.

I like to make our Firebreathers use the 20lb ball to reduce the cycle time!

Re: What weight ball for slams??

One size fits all for slamball for us and that's 20lb home-made. Even our smallest women start on that and can handle it.
