Equipment

hello all i live in Ottawa Canada I am having a hard time to find someone who sells crossfit type equipment in the area becasue as you know it costs a lot to ship just weight any help would be great thanks

I don't live in Canada, but you can "collect" equipment for some many different sources.

I've bought stuff from Sports Authority (big box retailer), Wal-Mart, a local fitness shop, freecycle, yard sales, internet orders...and even made some stuff on my own.

CF seems to really emphasize resourcefulness...so don't worry if you are not starting with "the best". You don't have to began with a Buddy Lee Jump Rope or c2 rower.

I began my home gym with a 300 pound "olympic" set from Sports Authority ($120) and a doorway chin-up bar ($15) and jump rope ($3) from Wal-mart. I made my own heavy bag for cardio (army duffel bag stuffed with old clothes and blankets).

I didn't even have a bench.

I've been adding to it and taking away as I go. In over a year's time its starting to get respectful.

But really crossfit doesn't need alot or fancy equipment.

I have to agree that if you're making a garage gym to just use yourself or with one or two family members you can do a lot of CF without much equipment. If you have something to do pullups from, some weights and some floor space, that takes care of a good percentage and the substitutes suggested in the FAQs or in the WOD's cut down further what you absolutely need. To go further, some things can be made (wallball, rings and parallettes are not difficult, boxes for jumping are not that hard, and I've also made a squat rack and a GHD substitute proving that they're not hard either. Plenty of other examples of things people make show up too). Household items can be used as substitutes for some things - backpacks for weighted pullups etc, things to jump on, hang off, use to raise your hands on instead of parallettes etc. Other equipment doesn't necessarily have to be from the recommended suppliers. A bench, squat rack or squat stands from anywhere will probably do the job at home. I'm in Australia by the way and some things are much more expensive here than in the US or (I assume) Canada, judging by the prices one sees on the message board, encouraging a bit of do it yourself for home use.

Joe, good to see there are some other Ottawa folks starting this madness called CrossFit.

I was also wondering if anyone has come across a local (or somewhat local) place selling bumper plates. My concrete floor is starting to take a beating from the long sets of deadlifts.
