Working one limb while the other is healing.

Has anybody heard of working one limb while the other is healing and seeing benefits in the limb thats healing. I swear I read something about this just cant remember where. Like for example, I tore my acl in my left leg and cant do much with it except for basic rehab, but I could still work on pistols with the other leg. Now I swear I heard or read somewhere that working out the good leg still causes a neuromuscular response that causes growth to occur in the bad leg.
Can anybody point me in the direction of some information on this, or who has some experience in this?
I plan on doing pistols with the good leg no matter what but was just curious about some science behind it all.

You retain some strength, and subsequently some mass due to the neurophsiological phenomena known as "cross education"


Basically, work some strength, but don't do too much cause you may develop an imbalance.
