i'm having trouble trying to find something to put on my pull-up bar. It's smooth metal; i started with tennis racket grip, kinda harsh and didn't hod up well. Then i covered that with athletic tape, ouch. i've got callouses on my callouses.
i'm thinking about bicycle handlebar tape...
any other suggestions?

I think Sean's probably right. Check out www.beastskills.com for a tutorial on how to take care of your hands. He uses a warm water soak and a pumice stones to smooth off all the dead skin. Eventually you'll end up with a very deep, very tough callous than won't peel as much or hurt.

Take a nice stiff steel wire brush and rough up your bar a bit. Bar's deserve to remain naked. They are meant to be in this state, do not cover them with silly wrapping :-P

You could probably use some really coarse sandpaper on it. Outside of that, I say grease it and develop the grip strength :-)

My callouses aren't pretty, but my hands would be bleeding constantly without them. Mine are mostly from riding, but they serve me well when lifting. I don't do anything for them... just peel dead layers when there's a little break.

I have wrapped a chinup bar with 1/4" rope. It worked well, but it was not for comfort.
