Zone - Food question

I was on SS for a few weeks and gained about 10 lbs. and also increased my lifts by a good amount. I was getting a little more fat on me than I wanted so now I'm back to CF and eating Zone. I'm starting out with 18 blocks, and if I get too lean I'm going to up the fat and etc.

However, when portioning out my snack today, I thought about something. When buying meats or in my example, cottage cheese, is it best to get the leanest or most fat free? I say this because in CFJ #21 it says 1/4 cup cottage cheese is 1 block protein. This is correct but the 4% fat stuff I have also has a good amount of fat and carbs which messed up my snack block size a bit.

The same goes for meat, should I buy lean pork chops/ground beef as I'm doing? What does the Zone calculate by?

Well the way your fat blocks are figured (1.5g/block) is based on your protein source having fat in it, and if it is particularly lean you go with the "full" fat block of 3g/block. I wouldn't worry so much about the fat, and no food is going to be 100% of one macronutrient, it's the overall effect that decides the block, so the carbs in your cottage cheese don't "count" per say... as long as zone stuff says cottage cheese = protein block. (and not 1c/1p like yogurt, milk, etc...)
