You can get a lot more power if you actually leave the ground. The clean is supposed to be a weighted jump, and unless you leave the ground it is not a jump

Actually, you don't create power by leaving the ground. Leaving the ground is just a side effect of the massive amount of power you create from the hip. In fact, you should not really leave the ground. When you are lifting heavy all the power you generate goes into getting the bar off the ground as high as you can and as soon as it is you need to get under it and not waste a second or else you won't be able to complete the lift. Jumping and the 'donkey kick' is a common fault in the clean and snatch.

yeah it's all about getting the bar high enough and the foot transition. No jump needed, but for beginners I think it is always best.
