I agree with Lincoln: for men of average size without experience, a 2:00 500 Meter should be fairly tiring but not gasping-for-breath-I'm-about-to-die tiring. I'd probably add 15-20 seconds for women (though I've seen all sorts of exceptions...it's amazing how much form affects things in the beginning). If you're heavy and tall and strong, make it 1:45 to 1:50.
