When I perform an overhead squat with heavy weight (for me, more than 135 pounds) or support such a weight with a snatch grip the muscle in my palm, on the thumb side, sometimes clenches up. What might be causing this? Weak palm or grip muscles? Some sort of wrist flexibility deficit?

This isn't a really huge problem at this point; resting a couple minutes alleviates the problem, and wrapping the wrists with athletic tape seems to kill it altogether; max singles are not an issue; reps from three to five are the problem.
