Katherine, it's also a mental thing. I've had gymnasts, myself, and my dad talk about if their warmup and preparatory stuff for a workout or competition was not done pretty much the same time, every time, that they were off their game.
Many athletes are like that. Yes, it reeks of OCD but it's also just a habit of training a particular fashion.
Oh yeah, definitely also a mental preparation factor. For me, warming up for a competition the same way that I would for training (and the same way before each training session) helps keep the adrenaline under control.
