"Tabata This" Rowing Substitution

An acquaintance and I recently had an argument as to what substitution better mimics rowing for the Tabata This workout. We seem to agree that sprinting is a good substitute, but we differ on how the sprints should be carried out. What, in y'all's minds, is a more accurate sub:

a) Sprinting a straight line, with x meters equalling 1 point, or
b) Sprinting back and forth y meters, y < x, and one length equalling 1 point
