Yes, carbohydrates are an essential energy source, but definitely not your only source of energy. Personally, since adding more healthy fats into my diet, MCT Oil, Coconuts Oil and or raw butter, I have felt a substantial impact upon my energy levels in a positive manner.
I used to run out of gas during my WODs and would add more carbohydrates to my diet, but still felt like crap. Even throughout the day would experience the highs and lows in terms of my energy level. However, after getting on board with the Zone Diet that has changed and I have found adding more healthy fat to my diet has boasted my energy levels more so then just spiking my insulin with more carbs. I no longer feel tired all the time, or gased during WODs and I also feel as though I recover better as well.
This is based on my own personal experience and that is all, nothing set in stone or from this study or that study. Just what has worked for me.
