There was a thread about this not too long ago asking this same question based on several WOD demos where the athletes hit the deck immediatley after their workouts and whether or not it's healthy.

I think the concensus was that hitting the deck for a very short while, only a few seconds, followed by walking or some other cool down was best. Having the heart go from tons of work to suddenly having to slow itself down would sound like an extra stressor, when a metcon WOD would already be providing ample amounts of stress.

I also think there was a tragic incidence of an athlete actually dying following a workout. Let me see if I can find the thread...
