Check out the book Lights Out:Sleep, Sugar and Survival.

The real key beyond even sleep is darkness as we need a period of darkness of abbout 9.5hrs to facilitate many hormonal changes. To the degree I do this my performance and recovery are dramaticly enhanced. Read Dan Johns experiment with sleep on his site.
