Its usually just an issue of "re-learning" the rhythm to jumping rope. The thinner cable ropes (Rogue, Again Faster, etc) are MUCH faster and lighter, requiring less effort to spin them, but they give almost no feedback, so you've got to nail the rhythm on your own. The thicker rubber/cable ropes like the Buddy Lee have more feedback, but are slower/heavier and prone to breaking more often.
I would encourage the serious athletes to try to use as light a jump rope as possible.
