Yes, this is why I advise building the sides first and then using the partially completed box to trace out the cuts for the top. I've always found that there is usually a difference between what the dimensions SHOULD be and what they ARE. Whenever possible, it's safer to measure based on actual dimensions instead of theoretical dimensions. That also saves you (uhh, me) from the embarassment of bone-headed errors in dimension calculations, such as when you forget to allow for the thickness of the wood or the thickness of the saw blade cut.
