As Matt points out you can't keep your back out of the rowing stroke. At the catch you have to bend forward to allow the chain to retract as fully as your flexibility allows. You begin your pull with completely straight arms and a powerful extension of your legs. As your legs get to full extension you begin leaning back and then finally get your arms into the pull at the end. Does this part of the pull hurt your back?
