Scribble completely over the permanent marker stuff with Dry Erase Marker (the kind you would more easily erase).
Now either erase with a dry board eraser or, if more effective, damp rag with glass cleaner.

This method works very well. I have also used alcohol to wipe the marker off afterwards.
As far as whiteboard markers that erase easily and don't leave much of a mark, I have found the Expo low oder to be the best.
