Re: what explains the extra soreness?

"Drop and gimme 30" is an untimed effort. All that matters is total energy consumed.

In the Tabata, you're also trying for maximum speed, which tests your ability to generate maximum power (energy...

Re: DB's instead of KB's

For swings, I find the KB grip more comfortable on my shoulder than the DB. For get-ups, I don't think it matters

Obviously, for KB-specific moves, you want a KB. If it's in your budget, go for...

Re: Walking Lunge subs

Consider the progression like this:

Static Lunge (One leg at a time, legs in position)
Dynamic Lunge (Return to center between reps, alternating legs)
Walking Lunge
Walking Lunge w/ Variation (Side...

Re: Warm-up

The Official Crossfit Warmup (http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/faq.html#General7) is here (WFS, I should hope!).

For now, three rounds will probably be a bit much. I'd suggest you do your five...

Re: Muscle Wasting from endurance training - fact or fiction?

Fiction.

World-class marathoners don't carry any upper body muscle mass because any excess weight, whether fat, muscle, or water, interferes with their ability to be a world-class marathoner.

Books...

Re: KB's - Hard Style or Soft Style?

We'll call it Tiger (for Woods)

1 round of Golf. While the others in your foursome are playing, do max rep burpees. Divide your burpee score by your golf score.

Re: What % of your body weight do you lift in a push up?

YMMV, Not Valid in Vermont, Puerto Rico, Guam, or where taxed or regulated, the Principality of Monaco, or Cleavland TN . . . .

There isn't a 1-1 correspondence to the difficulty. I can do a lot...

Re: What % of your body weight do you lift in a push up?

The rule of thumb for a "normal" pushup is 60-65%, iirc.

However the difficulty is much greater than a bench press. It wouldn't surprise me that if you could do 50 pushups you could do BPs with 60%...

Re: New to the Board & CrossFit Ideology

Well . . .if you CAN . . .

Just one level. Start at Buttercup. If that's not enough, try Puppy the next day until you find the right level for you.

You may find that on some things you're a Big...

Re: New to the Board & CrossFit Ideology

First off, welcome aboard. Congratulations on the weight loss. That's a pile of weight to drop. Great job! And your pullup numbers are awesome.

Since you can do a pullup, work on developing your...

Re: Power lifting vs. CrossFit

Coolness!

FWIW, I'd introduce METCONS as a cardio sub, "You GOTTA try this! It's SOOOOOOOO much more fun than LSD running!!!!"

Baby's .er . . My First Medball?

How heavy for my First Med Ball?

I'm 225.
My last CFT was 130/305/375
I usually sub 2x15 DB Thrusters for WallBall, unless the previous day was squat-heavy, in which case I drop it to 10.

Thanks

Re: Do I Need Dumbells?

If I was on a seriously tight budget, I'd get an on-sale Oly set and a set of rings.

I'd look to upgrade the bar with my next tax return, but keep the plates and not worry about the holes in the...

Re: BowFlex SelectTech

If I didn't already have the dbs, I'd consider buying a PowerBlock Personal Trainer (5-50lb by 2.5s). They seem to be well-made and the adjustment is simple and reliable.

I've not seen any other...

Re: Question for the experienced CF'ers :)

Any METCON is good. Look for words like "Post Times", "AMRAP", "For Time", which indicate METCON workouts.

The only caution is to make sure you don't have something like SDLP/Thrusters after a...

Look up "Blackbox ME," the standard way of blending METCONS and Strength work around here.

What you wind up doing in a BB-ME series is something like:

Monday Strength
Tuesday METCON...

Welcome aboard.

In the general case, don't worry about things like "rear delts", "upper mid center pecs," "third anterior segment of the middle serattus" . . . yes, I'm making these up.

Another thing:

Some lifts I'd have called "Good" a few months ago I now call "No Lift" because I'm more experienced and catch breaks–a hip thrust, a small step, too much lean–that I wouldn't have...
