Sport comes first is 100% right. Devoting time to training only is what makes the biggest difference in conditioning. I might start rowing and doing body weight metcons in 2 min rounds with 30...

I can't speak of any scientific evidence of this, but since I started doing barbell rows and face pulls weekly I feel stronger overall and definitely have better posture.
