Re: Post Starting Strength

That certainly sounds like a reasonable plan. I apologize for any misunderstanding. I just didn't want to recommend that anyone do sets of 10 or 15 or more on a movement like the power clean or...

Re: Post Starting Strength

Don't program explosive movements like this. Doing an AMRAP set of these would be a conditioning workout--not a strength builder. The best way to do these is to work up to heavy triples and singles...

Re: Question from a friend - Bench Press

Without knowing anything else about him, I can tell you that gaining weight usually gets the bench press moving.

Re: Post Starting Strength

Just to avoid confusion, however, for the squat, bench and press you would warm up then do 2 sets of 5 at the working weight, followed by 1 set of AMRAP at that weight. The goal of this third set it...

Re: Wendler 5/3/1

Leaving out the bench press is a great idea if you want to make less progress on your (overhead) press.

Re: sandbag vs bar and plates

I'd get 3 pairs of 45s, and a pair each of 25s, 10s, 5s, and 2.5s. You may want 2 pairs of 10s. If you're going to get some bumpers, then I'd get what Eric suggests.

Re: sandbag vs bar and plates

Sure, dropping metal plates can damage things. The solution to that (if you can't afford bumper plates) is simply to not drop the bar. So long as you are reasonable and intelligent about selecting...

Re: Post Starting Strength

I'll second what Eric said. GSLP is a great program, especially as a late novice after SS. It is sort of a Wendler-inspired Starting Strength, which not only sees your squat and deadlift volume...

Re: sandbag vs bar and plates

Yeah, it isn't even really a debate. A barbell is the single most important piece of equipment in your gym. Any good strength program is designed to center around basic barbell movements, and a gym...

Re: Wendler 5/3/1

That doesn't look half bad. Just remember to focus on the main lifts, and don't get too caught up in how well you do day-to-day in the assistance stuff. Wendler calls this "majoring in the minors"...

Re: Wendler 5/3/1

I suppose if you really like the snatch pulls then you can do them on your Press day, but it seems like you're hitting your upper back really hard every day. I know that you olympic lifters tend to...

Re: Wendler 5/3/1

There isn't much work for the glutes and hamstrings in that proposed workout template. I also wouldn't be doing snatch pulls at the end of my press day.

Re: Breathing Ladders

I did this for s***s and giggles as conditioning one day after my scheduled deadlift work with a 135# deadlift. I went 1-20 and got pretty sweaty. After you get to about set 7 or 8 or so you just...

Re: Wrist Wraps

I prefer the style that can be worn sort of like a wrist band and tightened up for sets. They're much more convenient than 'proper' wraps, but after looking around APT, Spud Inc. and EliteFTS, I'm...

Re: 70s Big Program Question

Fractional plates are fine in the right situation (I find they are more useful for women) but most people--like the original poster--should be more worried about getting down enough food to grow than...

Re: 70s Big Program Question

For the original poster, the money saved on fractional plates would be better spent on milk and peanut butter. Or some AtLarge protein.

Re: Nothing but Squat

Well if that's what you meant then the thought wasn't organized very well. Either way, jumping and sprinting are largely dependent upon the hip extensors--everyone's favorite glutes and hams. ...

Re: Nothing but Squat

I wouldn't say that box jumping is quad dominant at all. I don't see how this can happen if you are doing box jumps correctly (read: for height) and not just doing countless reps at 24" or whatever...

Re: Nothing but Squat

The dose makes the poison.

If programmed intelligently, I'd imagine you'd make progress doing this--certainly more than sitting on your couch or watching Oprah from your elliptical. However, it...

Re: 70s Big Program Question

Your problem is not your program--it is your bodyweight. As in, there isn't enough of it. You must realize that you are approaching a bodyweight press, which would be quite a feat if you didn't...

Re: Outdoor pullup bar construction

I haven't made one myself, but everywhere that I've read says that it is key to run the pipe through the uprights instead of just attaching it between them--if that helps.

Re: Building a box. a log.

Is that an old York bar?

That place is going to look awesome with some hardcore equipment and chalk all over the place. You'll probably get walk-ins thinking that its an art gallery.

Re: All About Speed and Getting Faster

Joe Defranco swears by a certain type of heavy sled drag for increasing sprinting speed. You might want to look that up--he also has lots of other interesting information on his site. He gets paid...

Re: Gslp

I'm not sure why neck training isn't more common around crossfit. Having a strong neck is at least as 'functional' as most anything else that's done around here, and is very important from a safety...
