Re: Squats vs. Deads

The lack of negative portion actually makes it harder. Next time you rep some deads, if you just touch the plates to the floor rather than totally resetting between reps you will find the lifts...

Re: Should cleans heavily work upper body?

The heavier a movement is, the more muscles it's going to recruitment as you just tense everything to move the weight, especially if the weight's in your hands. Had pec DOMS from rack pulls before;...

Re: To SDHP or not to SDHP?

Things I include are face pulls, poor man's shoulder horn, push-up+, L-flies and pullaparts.

Re: To SDHP or not to SDHP?

People seem to be confusing high pulls with upright rows. High pulls = good, upright rows = bad.

High pulls are a snap of the hips and a shrug to throw the bar up and your arms track the bar, so...

Re: Should cleans heavily work upper body?

Hard to say without seeing a video (hint hint). Pecs and lats are involved to some degree, if they're pretty heavy you'll need them to stabilise the weight.

Re: Squats vs. Deads

That will be partly related to the way they squat though; going to only parallel with an ultra-wide stance will mostly use your posterior chain in a similar way to a deadlift, so there will be...

Re: How can I get legs like these?

What's all this talk about 5k in 30mins like it's an impressive time? I'm a fatty with training focused on strength and even I can manage that.

Re: Squats vs. Deads

I disagree, I think that technique is about right. If your *** is at knee level it's a squat not a deadlift. You'd be relying on your quads more. The angle of the hips would still be at least the...

Re: Squats vs. Deads

Longer arms and shorter legs make deadlifting easier as the overall ROM is less. You don't always want a more upright torso position when deadlifting though - that's just a squat with the bar in a...

Re: Shoulder imbalance and barbells

I think you'd be better off sticking with the barbell and just ensuring you focus on this when you lift and taking an uneven lockout as a fail of that lift.

Re: Assisted Pull Ups

If you get the package then you've got a selection and can decrease the assistance over time.

Re: Crossfit with more strength days

Doh, sorry about that mate - completely missed the weighted chins reading through the first time! Being picky though I'd suggest adding something to the Friday session as well though (pull-ups,...

Re: SS With High BF%????

It's also worth bearing in mind what stage you are at; if you are 10% trying to get uber-ripped then yes, cut out / right down on fruit. However, if you're say >18% BF then you don't have to be as...

Re: lotsa squats!!!

Agree with Derek that it's not really textbook with the knees coming forward first; don't know if it's an issue or not tbh, but now is the time to see if you can sort it before the movement is too...

Re: SS With High BF%????

I'd say you need to diet for muscle gains as well, just diet differently to dieting for fat loss. (How many times can I say diet in a single sentence?)

Re: Crossfit with more strength days

I don't think maxing on two exercises on your fifth consecutive training day is a great plan. Might be better off moving the Thursday session to the Saturday if poss so you get a rest day before the...

Re: Programming opinions wanted

Starting Strength is a good beginner's programme but surely we can be more inventive than SS or CF being the answer to practically every question posted!? Something more individual might be more...

Re: "The Pump"

Well the thread is called the pump and the original post was asking if training with high-reps is useful for crossfit / strength training, which is what I was responding to when I brought up training...

Re: Rugby workouts

My favourite rugby conditioning drill we affectionately called the Circle of Pain. 8 guys make a ring, seven with tackle shields and 1 with a tackle bag laid on the floor. Another guy starts in the...

Re: Military Scenario WODs

How about...

Combatives

Empty a clip at a target
Loser carries winner 400m
Change opponents and repeat ad nauseum

Not that I've got the faintest idea about...

Re: Suggestion for new form guideline: Pushups

The heavier you get the worse idea knuckle push-ups are - great way to cause arthritis.

The optimal distance between your hands depends on the individual. Stronger pecs means you'll be stronger...

Re: shoulder inflexibility

Impossible to say without seeing the person in question but being unable to raise your arms overhead can be a lot to do with the position of your scapulae. Some external rotation (L-flies, Poor...

Re: Dumbbell Split Clean

I do these with kettlebells sometimes - high reps of these are awful (i.e. good) especially at a reasonably high BW. These are hard to get right if you are used to heavy BB cleans though - the extra...

Re: Charles Poliquin on Crossfit

Yup, he's not worded it very well but Crossfit would be useless for his athletes. If you are training specifically for a sport, why waste valuable recovery including so much variation in your...
