Re: leaning back to start shoulder press?

The purpose behind the press, as it is taught at Level 1 certs, is as a teaching progression for the push press and push jerk. The mechanics taught at the cert are not designed to elicit 1RM...

Re: Source for extended rest periods

This seems to be pervasive particularly within the CF community. Unfortunately, it will often manifest itself in nagging injuries, aches and pains, etc. and people still seem reluctant to accept...

Re: Helping an Obese friend get started

I'll second that. IMHO, priority number 1 for him should be to change his nutrition and lifestyle habits. I would suggest he buy "The Paleo Diet", read it, understand it, and dedicate the necessary...

Kelly Starett's most recent CFJ video addresses this very issue. Sounds very similar ro what you are experiencing. Check it out when you have a moment. Great stuff!

Re: bad programming?

While there is nothing inherently wrong with pairing these two movements, or any other two hip-dominant movements for that matter, the fact that you are experiencing soreness and pain today leads me...

Re: Lower back problem

Russell and Jason,
While this is a complex issue that could stem from any number of causes (posture, technique, muscle imbalance, dysfunction, etc.) one thing that I would recommend is shortening the...

Re: Shin/Calf Inflexiblity

Hi Lisa,
While proper mobility on both sides of a joint (in this case the ankle) is important, I have trouble thinking of any functional movement that would be restricted due to inflexibility through...

Hi Leah,
I will be working at the cert in Malvern as an instructor. I have yet to hear anything about the format being different from any other Level 1. Sign Up!

Re: Injuries and CrossFit

Agreed, Scott. But with respect to that, people need to take responsibility for their own actions. This is no way a flaw in CF programming or due to any inherent danger of the movements themselves,...

Re: Injuries and CrossFit

Emily,
Have you ever attended a CF certification, trained with a reputable CF trainer, or trained at an established, well-run CF affiliate?

I only ask because I think you have the wrong impression...

Re: Shoulder imbalance and barbells

I agree that most people are not balanced in their strength. However, just because this is a normal occurrence does not mean that it is optimal or something that should not be specifically addressed...

Re: Shoulder imbalance and barbells

Just realized I only addressed the bench press. A good alternative for shoulder presses would be a standing single arm DB press. Same deal - no trunk/hip movement, build up to equal volume and...

Re: Shoulder imbalance and barbells

I'll go ahead and disagree that you should continue using the barbell. Clearly, an imbalance exists in your body. Based on what little information we have, it is not possible to know where the...

Re: Paleo: All-or-nothing?

Thanks Sarena. Certainly, I understand limiting fruit intake in instances where weight loss is a goal or insulin sensitivity is an issue. However, to say that true paleo involves eating no fruit is...
