I agree with you, and I'm a young(ish) guy of 30. When my squat and deadlift got to 315, I capped them. It's just a convenient place to cap: 3x5 with one plate, 2 plates, 3 plates, and you're done....

I think the rule is that recovery is "not good" when you can't increase the weight for 2-3 workouts. (If it's only one time, it could be a fluke.)
