I have set of V2s that I purchased from MDUSA last November. The 55s are less than an inch thicker than the 45s. They look almost new after a year of garage usage.

Anjali makes a good point. Exterior oxidation will not have much effect on the "strength" of the bar. A dollar of athletic tape will keep the rust off of your hands.

Your signature line indicates Florida. I would be hesitant to put down plywood for an exterior "flooring" purpose unless you plan on raising it or have experience putting in a form of vapor barrier....
