I used a band saw for the overall shape and a router with a roundover bit to round the exposed edges. Lots of hand sanding to smooth it out. Three coats of poly for the finish.

If it was me I would put it together on the ground then screw that to the ceiling that way it all lines up no prob. Gonna need a hand holding it up though.
