maybe try Knees 2 elbows? also if you are working out with a partner, partner gets on floor on hands and knees, you sit on top looking back and "hook" your legs into your partners inner thighs,...

how can you know that your expending more energy while kipping ?

I think because i'm ussually more out of breath with the kipping kind, also you are not only using your arms but your abs and legs...
