Correct. Think of a squat - You are able to load more weight by doing a half squat compared to a deep squat. Start of with half-strokes to get the machine rolling and than lengthen out to 3/4 length....

I looked through photos on my camera and discovered my squat stand build from scaffolding. Costs were about 80 USD while it handled a load of 250kg/550lbs (weights, kettlebell and myself)...
